A Note About Fondant

Before you decide you just have to have fondant on your wedding cake, please consider that although it makes for perfectly smooth, gorgeous cakes, it may be an unnecessary expense for a bride on a budget. Fondant is more expensive to produce than buttercream frosting, and furthermore it is actually layered over frosting on the outside of the cake as well, so you will actually be paying for both fondant and buttercream no matter what. If you have never tried it, the taste and texture is somewhat similar to gumdrop candy. In other words, it tastes good - but will your guests want to eat more than one or two bites of it? Realistically, most will probably just peel off the fondant and eat the rest of their slice of cake.

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't want to discourage you from ordering a fondant-covered wedding or birthday cake if that is your heart's desire. To be honest, I love working with it! Plus, it can even keep your cake moister and more protected from summer heat than buttercream frosting would. Just be aware of what exactly it is that you are ordering. And of course, you are always welcome to a Sugar Buzz sample!
